This, my Tumblees, is a tomatillo. I had never had one until this weekend. I found them sold by the pound in my local supermarket and I thought to myself “I have never had one.” Then I bought a couple.
According to Wikipedia, tomatillo is a plant in the nightshade family and is related to the gooseberry. As you can see they come wrapped in sort of a “husk”. Here’s a warning: Under this husk, there is some sticky, sappy crap that you can’t wash off of your hands. It sucks. I ate a few slices of the tomatillo. Actually, half of it. It was like a crunchy tomato, but not as juicy and fairly tart. You know how when you eat a kiwi, you get that initial sour pang in the back of your mouth behind your teeth? It’s like that. Can’t say that I would just eat these raw for fun, but not bad overall. Maybe I’ll put some in a salad or something.
